Daiwa Z 2020H

The technology of the Daiwa baitcaster concentrates on the evolution of the braking system. In 2010 Daiwa introduces the most advanced baitcaster braking system for lure fishing – Magforce 3D.

Daiwa has a strong history of innovation. Our casting systems have set the standard for reel braking technology. In the early 1990’s Magforce introduced magnetic braking, delivering unrivalled line control.

By 1999 Magforce V had evolved, further refining the casting system and allowing anglers to cast lighter lures than never before.
Then came the new millennium and Magforce Z which could cast larger lures longer, smoother and more accurately. All these systems used a spring loaded inductor rotor in the spool that spun outwards between magnets to control the braking. Though efficient, it did not allow for different casting techniques or lure weights. Until now – enter Magforce 3D.

Combining the best attributes of the Magforce family, Magforce 3D features the ultimate in fine cast control. Unlike previous systems that relied on the inductor spinning into a single invariable magnetic field, the new Magforce 3D inductor rotor still shifts between the magnets but varies the strength of the magnetic field by shifting the magnets in the side plate. With three modes – Maxbrake, All Round and Longcast, Magforce 3D casting is now possible in three dimensions – Magforce 3D provides ultimate flexibility in one reel.

MAX BRAKE – in this mode the magnets are shifted towards the spool inductor to provide maximum magnetic field, which slows the spool. It is perfectly suited for casting into head winds with large crankbaits, heavy spinnerbaits or aerodynamically poor lures like swimbaits. ALL ROUND -in this mode the inductor rotor enters the magnetic field similar to the previous V and Z systems, providing braking during maximum speed to avoid over run. As the spool decelerates the inductor retracts allowing the spool to spin longer.

The perfect all-rounder. LONG CAST – in this mode the magnets move the furthest distance away from the inductor rotor, limiting the magnetic field and allowing unimpeded spool revolution. It is perfect for casting long distances in open water where there is little wind.

In addition to the three modes the Magforce 3D system can be set with the magnetic fine tune cast control dial. With 20 fine tune increments in 3 modes it offers 60 stages making it possible to cast in all conditions and situations. Z2020H introduces unparalleled rotary spool efficiency producing optimum casting performance never felt before.

Although spool control is the key to casting, unimpeded line flow is one of the most overlooked features of baitcaster design. The Z2020H introduces a new line guide design that uses a funnel shaped line guide with a wide entrance and thin exit. This allows line to exit more efficiently. By locating the line guide 38mm away from the spool (previous designs were 28mm) the line exits at a reduced angle resulting in smooth line discharge with minimum noise or line wear.

A new generation of Daiwa baitcaster design is here, Daiwa Z 2020H…delivering what anglers want – pure casting pleasure.

Berkley Mondy BARRA Trophy Results

Team Rapala/JT Reel Repairs on fire!

The new pinup couple of barra angling Daniel Grech and Belinda Winton smoked the rest of the field over three sessions, amassing 8/9 barra for 6.86m nearly 2.5m clear of their nearest competitors. Here is how the tournament unfolded;

On Saturday the 17th of April at 6am, 18 keen and optimistic teams lined up for the Inaugural Barra Trophy Tournament on Lake Monduran. Conditions were looking tough for barra fishing. To give you some background, the lake had risen from 33 to 75 percent from February to March. There were quite a few areas with bad water quality and some fish kills evident. In previous weeks, good reports were rare as hens teeth, and to top it off, there were scattered showers and squalls, with cool southerlies assisting to lower water temps.
Essentially, the anglers were up against some of the toughest impoundment barra conditions imaginable. As they set off at dawn, hopes were still high.

As the tournament progressed, many teams proved that Mondy’s barra are still there, and willing to bite if you can find them and tempt them. There were two different patterns that emerged; suspending hardbodies, and lipless soft vibes that dominated the top five positions.

Stats

18 Teams

Session 1 – 8 barra. Session 2 – 18 barra. Session 3 – 11 barra

Total – 37 Barra Caught for 22.81m, average size 61.6cm

Top Five Teams Results

5th Tackle Warehouse Ladies – Elaine and Katie Sanderson

The Mother and Daughter team from Biloela struggled in the first session, but found fish in the second session. The first barra they got to the boat was a metre plus fish. The joy was shorted lived as the fish broken the landing net and got away. The ladies were devastated, but went on to catch another four fish for the session. Netting each one holding the frame of the net only! Katie was on fire with an XRap landing the three best, while Elaine also got a little one to the boat. Unfortunately the final session didn’t produce for the ladies, but they finished in a very respectable 5th.

4th Rapala Street Team – Craig Griffiths and Daniel Roth

Craig and Dan found fish late in the first session, they hooked three or so that proved very camera shy and declined to be photographed!

Session two they headed straight back to the point opposite white rock, where they fished 50m from Fishin’ Buddies. Tied up to a tree, casting in towards drowned shrubs on the point, the guys would work their suspending XRaps hard for a few meters, and then let them sit…..and sit….sometimes 15 to 20 seconds.

They put three fish in the boat in session 2, for 191cm, and one more in session 3 to secure 4th place with 243cm of barra.

3rd Fishing Buddies – Peter and Kyle Hansen

This Father and Son team from Alexander Hills, we’re beaming as they came in after session one. They had a cracking morning, hooking 11 fish and landing four. They lost three lures to big fish around trees. Kyle’s gun lure was a Bomber while Pete was on the XRaps, all lures rigged to suspend. Fishing further along the point opposite White Rock, tied off to a tree in around 12 feet, casting towards the bank. Kyle worked the shallower 3-5 foot area to the right with his Bomber, and Pete worked slightly deeper and around some drowned shrubs to the left with XRaps. Using 30lb line on Spin gear exclusively, The Hansen’s both worked their suspending lures with twitches and again very long pauses, many of the hits came after 10 – 20 seconds of pause. Session 2 , although not quite as red hot as the first session, Fishin’ Buddies still caught their limit of three barra for 183cm.

Session 3, proved tougher, Pete and Kyle had a few opportunities late in the sessions, but lost big fish to hooks pulling and Kyle’s bomber was destroyed by a barra under the boat pulling the rear hooks out of the lure.

The Fishin’ Buddies were stoked with their weekend and getting such results in their second ever barra tournament. Saturday was their best ever Barra Fishing day, in their three years of fishing Monduran.

2nd Team Team Halco – Jason Ehrlich and Tommy Wood

A real mixture of youth and experience, it proved that young Tommy had to show Jason how it was done on Saturday. In fact, 10 year old Tommy from Gin Gin showed up the entire field by catching the first ever barra in a barra trophy tournament at 6.34am Tommy hooked and landed a 64cm barra on a Rapala XRap. Proving this was no fluke he pulled two more fish in the Saturday afternoon session, including a metery that won him the biggest barra Junior catergory and put team Halco into 4th Overnight.

Fishing a point in Jacks Bay, Jason finally cracked the pattern Sunday morning. After losing two good fish around wood early in the session, he finally managed to get two good ones to the boat, including a 105cm model that took out Big Barra Senior for the competition.

Jason and Tommy had their best results fishing a point in Jacks using suspending Rapala XRaps. Their tally of 5 fish for 440cm gave them an 88cm average, well above the average sized fish for the weekend. Their winning technique was again the super long ‘pause for effect’!

Mondy Barra Trophy Champions

Team Rapala/JT Reel Repairs – Daniel Grech and Belinda Winton

Where do I start? …….. Daniel Grech 21 year old Cadet Engineer from BMA Coalfields, Moranbah, fished with his 20 year old girlfriend, HR Student Belinda Winton from Townsville. The new pinup couple of barra angling smoked the rest of the field over three sessions, amassing 8/9 barra for 6.86m nearly 2.5m clear of their nearest competitors. Here is how their tournament unfolded;

These guys couldn’t get away from work until late Friday arvo, so missed the prefish and briefing, arriving at Gin Gin around 11pm after a 7 hour drive.

Saturday morning they headed off last, to face the ‘New’ Mondy for the first time. They had a look in ‘B’ to find dead water and fish, and then decided to try Jacks Bay where they found a nice shallow point with wind blowing onto it, sparsely timbered and close to the deeper water of the creek bed. They identified barra on their Humminbird 997 Side Imaging sounder, which gave them confidence to fish the point. Action came soon after ,in the form of several catfish and then their first barra to Daniel at 9.30, followed by another just half an hour later.

Session two, straight back to their point, they got another three fish, Two to Daniel and one to Belinda, although the fish were deeper in the afternoon session with all fish caught casting parallel to the boat rather than into the bank.

Session 3, Their point continued to produce, albeit smaller barra, but enough to fill their limit, and secure a sensational victory in the inaugural Barra Trophy!

Their winning lures were FLT Transam 95s in AYU with standard hooks. These were cast into the point which also had drowned shubs on the edge. In stark contrast to the other teams suspended hardbody approach, the transom was hopped quite quickly and aggressively , as close to the bottom as possible without fouling on the drowned grass. In the morning sessions the fish all came from the shallows. However in the afternoon session the fish were holding deeper in 10 – 16 feet.

Outfits used were Daiwa Steez and Zillion baitcasters matched up ACM custom rods made in Mackay. Line was 20lb Platypus Superbraid rigged with 40lb Black Magic fluorocarbon leader. Using the relatively light leader wasn’t a problem for the duo, as they fished relatively light drag setting, due to the lighter standard hooks on the Transams.

Proving that theory that were you find catfish, you will find barra, the pair also took out the title of Catfish Kings with 15 for the weekend, and Belinda got the biggest Catty and 62cm fork. Well done to Daniel and Belinda on an outstanding effort over the weekend.

Thankyou

Thank you to all the teams that braved the conditions, and came and had a go. It was great to see teams put the effort in and find fish. There was a great sociable atmosphere at the comp, and a sharing of information that saw more teams catch fish as the comp progressed.

A Big thankyou to the sponsors

Thanks for the great support of impoundment barra tournaments!

New Daiwa Certate

The original Certate, introduced in 2004, brought ground breaking technology with Real Four design, a combination that set standards for all Daiwa spinning reels from that time on.

Its unparalleled engineering produced a flawless design that became the flagship for Daiwa. Until now. Introducing the all new Certate.

New innovations and unparalleled designs, it’s what you’ve come to expect from the world leader in fishing tackle.

The new Certate heralds a giant leap forward in design, revolving around one ground breaking material – magnetic fluid. Developed by NASA to magnetically deliver fuel to space ships, this technology has been adapted now to Daiwa’s latest flagship spinning reel.

Mixing a liquid with iron isn’t easy, but Daiwa has mastered it in the new Certate range. When dispersed evenly through liquid, the iron oxide (magnetite) has a diameter of 1/100,000mm, so small that the surface area of the ferromagnetic particle is around 1/10th of a single influenza virus.

This new metallic grease/oil takes on a new effect, placed by itself it forms a typical liquid helical shape with the introduction of a magnetic force it changes shape similar to the android in Terminator II, attaching itself to any other metal to form a seal. So strong is this magnetic liquid that if placed in a container with a magnetic surface it would retain its shape even if the bottom was removed.

Being magnetized this lubrication system avoids any friction and prevents dust intrusion, eliminating oil spray and significantly improving reel life expectancy.

The challenge for Daiwa was to use utilise the inherent benefits of magnetic liquid in reel design. Instead of it being used to dustproof, we needed something that was waterproof. Innovative design combined new CRBB bearings with a magnetic oil membrane and making it possible.  Water intrusion is now a thing of the past, the dream was realised. Just when you thought Certate was the best you could buy, think again.

Daiwa’s primary design motivation in redeveloping the Certate was to exclude water.  Given its popularity amongst anglers fishing marine waters, sealing the Certate was a major goal in taking it to the next level. No leakage would mean no corrosion, longer life and better performance.

When saltwater penetrates a reel and dries, it crystallizes, then erodes gears and bearings. Although waterproof gaskets and “o rings’ prevent water intrusion in most instances, they have the disadvantage of, producing friction and thus winding inertia. With saltwater fishing, in order to increase the durability of the reel, Daiwa had to make the waterproof structure an absolute priority. Through years of research and development, Daiwa found the solution – a membrane of magnetic oil which shuts out saltwater. By using magnetized oil in conjunction with magnets a seal is created. We call it “Mag Seal”.

You’ll call it magic and a transformation to long lasting, smooth rotary efficiency. Not only does “Mag Seal” prevent saltwater penetration for a smoother revolution of the rotor system, it also increases sensitivity. You will feel more connected to lures, detect more bites and fight fish with ease. Real design and real technological development for ‘reel sensitivity’. Keeping saltwater out will make fishing more enjoyable and productive.

Making use of the magnetic fluid technology, we have redeveloped the rotor to perfection, introducing a whole new revolution in spinning reel design – Air Rotor. Previous rotor systems have been based around the same design principles for the past 44 years, though efficient, with Daiwa needed a new rotor design to compliment Mag Seal.

The functional beauty of Air Rotor is like no other, complimenting the Mag Seal system, Air Rotor is truly a revolution in sensitivity. The new rotor now serves several functions. Firstly the main principle of the rotor is support the line roller, line is pulled instantaneously from the spool to the line roller creating stress and flexing to a concentrated section of the lower rotor. The new arch form disperses pressure to the entire lower entire section of the rotor, dramatically decreasing stress and flexing.

Sensitivity is one of the strongest attributes of Air Rotor. The rotor is made from a high sensitive resin that transmits vibration through the reel more efficiently than ever before. By hollowing out the rotor system, a lighter construction is created with more surface area, resulting in increased strength and greater transmission of vibration. With a decrease in weight the balance has been fine tuned, with a lower centre of gravity and precise centre of axis the rotor spins more efficiently with perfect balance. This decrease in weight, increased surface area and new resin construction transmits lure vibration to the angler like never before.

Working in conjunction with the Mag Seal the Air Rotor has been hollowed out to create airflow through the whole rotor system.  The new design when rotated forces air flow into the heart of the rotor and Mag Seal system helping to prevent foreign material such as water, salt, sand and dust collecting inside the reel. Rotary sensitivity has never been described in any other reel, the new Certate breaking new grounds and setting the standard for future developments.

The new Certate is available in 7 sizes from the ultra finesse 1003 up to the heavy duty 3000 model. For more in-depth information check out the new mini Certate site on www.daiwafishing.com.au or order a copy through the Daiwa site of the new Certate catalogue.

Lowrance HDS dominates Barra Tour

Using the revolutionary Lowrance HDS (High-Definition System) to maximum advantage, Lowrance Pro Team members filled three of the top 10 places in the 2009 ABT Barra Tour, which concluded late last year.

Cy Taylor cemented his position as Australia’s No. 1 ranked barra angler by taking out the Individual Angler of the Year (AOY) title for the third consecutive year, followed closely by fellow Lowrance Pro Teamer Jason Wilhelm. Cy and Jason also won Northern Barra AOY and Southern Barra AOY respectively. Making it a family affair, Cy and his brother Kerrin also took out Team AOY!

All three anglers agreed the advanced technology of Lowrance HDS gave them the winning edge in the tour.
Featuring built-in award-winning Broadband Sounder™ technology, HDS delivers peerless echo clarity and the highest underwater definition ever achieved by Lowrance. The system’s greater sensitivity, minimal clutter and amazing separation of fish from cover helps anglers find more fish – in both freshwater and saltwater, from shallow water through to extreme sea depths.

The Lowrance HDS series of multi-function displays also combines innovative chartplotting, intuitive operation, and accommodates Ethernet radar and NMEA2000 networking for fuel, engine and boat-operations management solutions.

Available in fully sunlight-viewable HDS5 (12.7cm), HDS7 (16.3cm), HDS8 (21.3cm) and HDS10 (26.4cm) screen sizes, in several configurations, the Lowrance HDS series is the ideal solution for boaters who require an easily networked or standalone electronics package.

Runner-up AOY Jason Wilhelm also used the groundbreaking Lowrance StructureScan™ during the tour. Networked with a Lowrance HDS unit, the LSS-1 sonar-imaging module is the world’s first to offer anglers a new dimension in underwater picture-like displays – side-to-side plus straight down, full panoramic viewing.

StructureScan features a combination of SideScan and exclusive new DownScan Imaging technology. SideScan provides full-screen left and right side-viewing with extra-crisp detail of up to 146m (480ft) of underwater coverage that displays structure and fish targets, as well as their imaging-scan shadows. The new DownScan Imaging feature allows anglers, for the first time, to see submerged detail directly beneath their boats, providing a complete underwater picture in a screen format that is easy to interpret.

The on-screen display versatility of Lowrance HDS allows anglers to merge side and down sonar scans in split-screen to view wide-area surveys and highly-defined detail. As a unique tool, anglers can also compare DownScan Imaging with 2D sonar images in split-screen display to better distinguish fish from structure – removing all of the guesswork common to other fish-finding technology.
