Halco Lake Monduran Final results

Cy Taylor made a clean sweep of the 2009 Daiwa BARRA Tour with his 3rd win from 5 events taking out the Halco Monduran Afternoon tournament with 4/10, 440cm limit.

The No.1 ranked BARRA angler redeemed himself after a poor Awoonga 2 Day event with a massive 110cm fish average. Fishing shallow edges and bays around the B arm of the lake, the Taylor duo used the electric motor when it was calm and maintained position with the anchor when the wind increased.
Searching for active fish the brothers tried new areas every 20-30 minutes until the bites eventually came. Hitting 7 different edges in the dam that they knew would hold barramundi, they continued to rotate the spots with constant casting and moving. Fishing the timbered areas any barra that they were able to put in the net were valuable points.

The lure of choice was the Squidgy Slick Rig 110mm in green grunter and the new yakka colour with an added stinger hook below the belly with a crimped wire connection. Modifications to this also included a small amount of plastic trimmed from the wrist of the tail to make the tail kick better in the water. The boys also boiled their slick rigs to soften the plastic and enhance the swimming action with the addition of S-Factor scent every 40 to 50 casts.

Using a Millerods Salty Barra with a Shimano Core 100MG, Cy chose to spool this with 20lb Fins braid and 80lb Jinkai leader.

“The retrieve I used was to slowly roll the bait up in the shallows with an occasional small jiggle and pause to try and stimulate the fish into biting,” explained Taylor.

“We’ve often found we get strikes from barramundi about 2 to 3 seconds after the plastic is jiggled and jerked,” he continued.

Trying to stimulate the barra into biting during daylight hours requires the bait to be put in front of them, unlike at night when the barra are cruising searching for food.

Although fishing was tough, 2009 continued on its record breaking ways with a new limit of 89 barra for 8457cm over the two days of tournament fishing at Lake Monduran.

Taking advantage of this was 2nd place Carl Jocumsen with his 4/10, 393cm limit all caught in the second session.

Fishing with Ian ‘barra’ Miller the pair stuck to their prefish plan and fished the back of Jacks Bay. Day one’s weather conditions didn’t suit with the winding changing from south east to the north.

Continuing in Jacks Bay on day 2 Carl and Ian used a reaction bite by burning their plastics to the sulking barra in the dropping water. The Squidgy Pro Slick Rigs 110mm in bleeding mullet rigged with a mustard treble stinger proved irresistible.

Carl used a Millerod Beast Buster matched to a Shimano Stella 4000 with 20lb Berkley Fireline Crystal and 80lb Jinkai Plus leader.

The area resembled a 6ft flat with multiple features including a creek bed, weed and timber. By fanning out casts Jocumsen was able to tempt the cruising barra with his fast burn and retrieve method.

Of the 4 fish in the boat he also recalls 3 bust offs including a 120cm next to the boat, but the memorable moment had to be Ian breaking his rod as a massive barra surged through the timber smashing his tackle.

The big barra was contested by several anglers eventually going to Rick Napier with a 124cm specimen also caught on a black gold Slick Rig. Fishing the Island at the end of the main basin the barramundi took the slow rolled bait after two cranks of the handle after Rick through the plastic into a school of flicking bait fish. With not too many obstacles in the way, the team we’re able to pull the anchor and follow the beast with the electric motor until it came into the net.

With the Halco event wrapping up the tour the presentation at the Gin Gin Hotel meant that anglers could relax and enjoy their memories of the tour with their newly formed friendships.

ABT would like to thank all the competitors and sponsors on yet another highly successful Daiwa BARRA Tour and look forward to 2010. For all the info stay tuned to www.australianbarra.com.au or ph ABT on 07 3387 0888.

Berkley Lake Awoonga 2 Day Evening Event

Jason Wilhelm, operator of Barra Madness charters, has taken out the Berkley Lake Awoonga 2-day evening event. Catching his limit each day Wilhelm’s 10/10, 1010cm total not only secured the tournament victory but also set a new 10 fish record for ABT BARRA events. This event also set a new record for the most barra caught in a tournament at Lake Awoonga (229 fish) and overall length in an ABT tournament (21993 cm).
Taking out his third ever ABT BARRA event, Wilhelm (Team Shimano/Etec) fished the same location on both days, a point with a weedy edge near Pelican Bay. Anchoring approximately 50 meters off the point in 18 feet of water, Wilhelm cast to a weedy edge that dropped into 12 feet. Counting down the plastic till it reached the required depth, Wilhelm was able to effectively target the bites on offer.

“Using my Lowrance HDS Structure Scan I was able to identify fish and the level where they holding. The lure used was a 130mm Squidgy Slick Rig in black/gold rigged on a TT jighead. The lure had been modified with a treble stinger, sonics and other adaptations that change the characteristics of vibration. The team spent a lot of time getting the lures ready. When your lure is the key, modifications are necessary to perform to the level required”

“The key to getting the bites was mixing up the retrieve. Constantly adapting the retrieve with variations until we keyed into the bites was important. It wasn’t just about repetition.”

On day 1 Wilhelm landed eight fish to comfortably fill his tournament limit with 5/5, 523cm. “I had my first two fish in the first hour”, explains Wilhelm. Finding the fish receptive Wilhelm continued to catch fish throughout the session with the smallest in his limit reaching 95cm. Even losing a 120cm plus fish at the side of the boat didn’t faze him. “Previously a loss of a fish like that in a tournament may have rattled me. But the experience of guiding and being involved in tournaments since their inception has allowed me to keep a positive mindset regardless of the conditions or variables outside my control”.

Day 2 saw Wilhelm confidently head out to his position. “Having over five meters on the board and knowing the fish were still biting had me confident heading out. If you can post over five meters of fish each day you are giving yourself every opportunity of taking out the tournament”.

Even when the wind changed from a NW to SE direction Wilhelm adapted to the conditions. “The wind change caused us to blow off our mark. The anchor I use is reasonably large and heavy for this reason. Still we had trouble at times securing our position”. Once anchored up though, the bites continued to come for Wilhelm.

Wilhelm built on his first day total with a further eight fish on day two. Wilhelm’s 5/5 , 487cm together with his first day results saw him secure victory by 16cm from his nearest competitor. “I am excited to secure the win against some of the best tournament competitors going around. To set a new 10 fish record is special and something I will remember for a long time. Thanking all his sponsors for their support, Wilhelm proved to be a worthy victor over the two days of the tournament.

Wilhelm’s outfit consisted of a 7″ Shimano T Curve Snapper spin rod teamed with a Shimano Stella 4000 reel spooled with 30lb Shimano Power Pro braid and 100lb Black Magic Supple Trace leader. “The Power Pro provides amazing strength and usability. Barramundi are not leader shy so going to 100lb provides extra protection against being rubbed off. All leader lengths are 1m or less and are secured with a slim beauty knot”.

Securing second position with 10/10, 994cm was Jake Schwerin of team Fish Catching Machines. Fishing the same location for both days of the tournament, a weedy edge at Gold Mine Point, Schwerin fell just shy of taking out the tournament. With only two anglers catching their limit each day, Schwerin proved to be in top form throughout the competition.

“The location at Gold Mine Point had nearby deep water and broken clumps of weed. During the day we would fish in around 14 feet of water. Come evening we would move into around 9 feet around 25-30 meters from the weed”.

Catching 7 fish on the first day for a 5/5, 506cm limit, Schwerin only trailed the leader by 17cm. With three fish in his limit over the magic one meter mark, the only question was whether his location would hold up over the two days?

“The bite time was spread out throughout the session. With deep water access and scattered weed, the location provided some great territory for fish. During the day the fish would stay in deeper water. When the bite shut down we would gradually move into shallower water until at around 8pm we would be sitting pretty tight to the weed”.

“Heading out for the second session I was nervous. I had m first fish early but then it went quiet. It wasn’t till around 6.30pm that bites began again, and fortunately I found the remainder of my limit. The last fish came with 25 minutes left in the session. The relief was enormous when I knew I had my limit”.

The lure of choice was the 130mm Squidgy Slick Rig in black/gold. The lure was boiled to promote vibration and the tail was spiked in chartreuse dye. Slow rolling the lure proved to be the most effective retrieve, although we experimented with some success throughout the two days. Sometimes my retrieval ratio would get the bites, other times it would be slower. We worked together to maintain the optimum retrieve speed”.

“The wind was generally blowing onto the point we were targeting. In patches this would turn the water dirty. We chose not to anchor for the tournament, instead doing wind drifts and using the electric to maintain distance from the bank. We would drift for 150m then motor back to our start position before starting the drift again”.

Schwerin’s 5/5, 488cm day 2 limit saw him almost take victory. “I was pleased with the result. To secure my limit each day was great. Each day my goal was to go out there and just fish to get my limit. Against a quality field I was very happy to secure a good finish”.

Schwerin’s outfit consisted of a G Loomis Forcelite rod 12-20lb 6″3’teamed with a 6.3:1 Daiwa Zillion reel spooled with 45lb Saltwater PE braid and 80lb Penn 10X leader. “I was using around a rod length of leader that was progressively trimmed as it became roughed up. Eventually I only had a foot of leader but the bites were still coming”, explains Schwerin.

The tournaments biggest barramundi went to Sam Haig with a 121cm fish caught on day two. Caught at Rabbit Point around 8.30pm, the fish fell to a 5″ Berkley mullet in black/clear modified with a stinger hook.

“We were anchored in around 30 feet of water casting back into 12-14 feet. I was casting the lure tight to the weed, ripping it out and letting it drop down the weed face. The take was just a gentle tap. I set the hooks and the barra went deep. It took around 6-7 minutes to get the fish to the side of the boat. When it came up the stinger had it pinned in the top lip. It was my first fish over a meter and a great result”.

The Daiwa BARRA Tour now moves to the final event, the 2 day Halco Lake Monduran afternoon event, Dec 4th-5th. For further information on the Daiwa Barramundi Tour check out www.australianbarra.com.au or contact ABT on (07) 3387 0888 (B/H).

Daiwa Lake Awoonga BARRA Night Championship – Results and Story

The 2009 Daiwa Lake Awoonga Night Championships produced a session of red hot fishing, in turn rewriting the ABT barramundi record books.

Under a full moon anglers were treated to some of the best tournament fishing conditions on record.

With no less than eleven anglers catching more than 5 meters of fish it was going to take something special to eclipse the field of 32 teams assembled to do battle on Lake Awoonga.
Daniel Grech, a 21 year old apprentice fitter and turner, produced a sensational 5/5 583cm tournament limit to take out the championship, in turn securing his maiden ABT barramundi victory and rewriting the previous 5 fish limit of 514cm set at the same 2006 tournament. In a sign of how successful anglers were at this event, eight anglers overcame the 2006 record set by Jake Schwerin. Furthermore the record for the largest barramundi caught in an ABT tournament, also held by Schwerin, was bettered with a monster 126cm specimen captured.

Fishing upriver Grech, of Team JT Reel Repairs, targeted a weedy point identified in the prefish. Fishing in 10 feet of water, Grech found a submerged weedbed that produced eight fish during the session, with six over the magic meter mark. Using 12cm and 14cm long Rapala X-Rap lures in black and silver colour, Grech secured his bites throughout the session. The Rapala X-Rap lures were retro fitted with Decoy wide Gape trebles and split rings to further secure the bites on offer.

“It was an amazing experience. The stuff you read about in fishing magazines. The session of a lifetime. Sharing a double hookup with my teammate on a pair of 120cm barramundi and landing both fish was something special.”

Using his Humminbird Side Imaging sounder, Grech identified barramundi moving into the area. “The fish would come into the area in groups. Often shortly after we would get bites. It was a useful tool to identify the prime bite periods.” The key to bites explained Grech was constant motion, “The lures were worked fairly aggressively with few pauses. This action proved to be most effective during the session.”

Grech, who has fished both northern rounds of the 2009 Daiwa BARRA Tour, was clearly happy to achieve such an outstanding result. “I don’t get to fish the southern dams as much as I like so this is a great result. To be able to go out with a mate and achieve this is something to remember.”

Grech’s outfit consisted of a 7″ Daiwa Steez machine gun rod teamed with a matching Daiwa Steez baitcaster reel spooled with 20lb Bionic braid and 40lb Black Magic fluorocarbon leader. “The thinner profile braid goes through the weed much easier than heavier gauges. If you tie your knots correctly, I find that 40lb leader does the job nicely”, explains Grech of his decision to use lighter gauge braid and leader.

Jason Croft, a 29 year old BCF Manager, produced a sensational 5/5, 582cm to narrowly fall short of taking victory. Fishing approximately 40 meters from Team JT Reel Repairs, Croft targeted a point with a nearby deep water dropoff. With challenging conditions greeting Croft at the start of the session, it took some time to begin his assault on the competition.

“Upon arriving the wind was gusting 20-25 knots. As a result it took about 40 minutes to get a solid anchor hold. With up to 50 feet of rope out at times, the start of the session was challenging weather wise”

With a second place finish at the Teemburra round in 2008, Croft had runs on the board at tournament level. Once Croft had anchored and found his rhythm the bites began to eventuate. In total Croft landed 7 barramundi with 5 over the meter mark. Whilst falling agonisingly short of his maiden victory, Croft broke a long standing BARRA Tour record.

“Mid session I was using a Rapala X-Rap 14 SPM lure. I was slow rolling the lure with periodic twitches when I hooked into a big fish. What unfolded was special.” What eventuated was not only a personal best capture for Croft, but also an ABT BARRA record for biggest barramundi caught in a tournament. Eclipsing Jake Schwerin’s 2006 125cm record set at the same tournament, Crofts sensational 126cm barramundi showed the potential on offer at this great fishery.

Using 12cm and 14cm Rapala X-Rap lures in spotted minnow and purple gold, retro fitted with size 2 Owner ST66 trebles and Owner Hyperwire rings, and 130mm Squidgy Pro Slick Rigs in drop bear colour painted black on the back, Croft effectively worked his chosen tournament location.

Croft on his lure modifications, “I would paint the back of my slick rigs black to give them more contrast in the water. With the X-Raps I would add a hand made tail, made from a combination of feathers and kinky fibre. This would generate more movement and action in the water.

“The X-Rap lure mimicked the garfish bait in the area. A constant retrieve with gentle twitches mixed up at times with aggressive rod movement proved to be the key. The always moving lure emulated the bait to perfection. As bait moved into our area the bites followed.”

Crofts outfit consisted of an AC Custom 6-10kg 6’6″ fast action rod teamed with a Daiwa Zillion HSA reel spooled with 30lb Berkley Tracer braid and 60lb Black Magic Tough Trace leader.

When quizzed on the key to his tournament success Croft deliver this helpful piece of information, “When an angler hooks up, other people on the boat often quickly wind in their lures. We found that continuing to cast until immediately needed on the net often resulted in further bites or a continuation of the bite window.”

The Daiwa BARRA Tour now moves to the penultimate event, the 2 day Berkley Lake Awoonga Evening tournament, Nov 30th-Dec 1st. For further information on the Daiwa Barramundi Tour check out www.australianbarra.com.au or contact ABT on (07) 3387 0888 (B/H).

Fishing Weipa and the Eclipse Experience.

Having never been to Weipa, I could not wait to experience some of the epic fishing sessions the boys in the QFM office describe aboard the Eclipse. With a motley crew of previous Eclipse holiday makers including Mark ‘Chainsaw’ Lawson, Peter Morgan and our frequent US bass pro friend Gary Boyd, the remainder of the troop including visiting American bass pro Mike North, the humorous Peter May, AFC bass pro David Green, (in one of his few appearances in salt water) and myself, ABT organiser, Marcel Krieger.
Day 1.
With a short plane flight from Brisbane to Cairns and then onto Weipa, the Eclipse experience includes airport transfers and we were pleasantly escorted by local guide Dave Donald. Loading all the gear into the trailer, we set off on a 2 hour drive north past the township of Mapoon and along the 14km beach stretch to Camp Chivaree located on Janie Creek, owned and operated by Dick Foster.

Keen to hit the water we climbed aboard the Eclipse mother ship, a multi decked, air conditioned home away from home for the next week. Complete with drinks fridge, unlimited desalinated water, hot showers and 3 smaller aluminium boats to fish from. A 5 hour steam to the Jackson River meant that we would be fishing pristine, uninhabited waters come the morning.

Day 2.
Before we set off in the boats for the first morning, Mark Lawson thought he would get the edge and have a cast from the mother ship. Landing one of the smallest grinners I have seen, he started out our species list for the trip and a massive target to improve on.

Heading out along the beach and into the mouth of the Jackson River, I experienced flats fishing at its best, with blue salmon, queenies and trevally pushing the bait form the gutters into the shallows and smashing any lure worked fast enough in their vicinity.

Visiting the Eclipse for another hard earned drink and freshly made lunch, it was time to head off again; however, like usual in Weipa the winds pick up and working vibration baits and plastics around the mouth was the order of the day. Peter Morgan scoring some 8 barra from the bank and Gary Boyd the prized fish of the trip, a lovely sized permit.

Day 3.
Heading offshore the next morning we experienced enormous manta rays feeding on the baitfish schools metres from the boat, whilst catching a myriad of fish. My afternoon session was a highlight spent anchored to a snag with David Green and slow rolling plastics we caught 50cm plus mangrove jacks, queenies, fingermark, barramundi, trevally and estuary cod. Several of these fish finding their way to the dinner table for a feed of fresh fish for all aboard. Just watch out for those massive gropers lurking before the back of the ship ready to inhale anything that touches the surface.

Day 4.
With the winds low in the morning, we headed out the front to attack the bait schools. Lopping large plastic swim baits under the schools, Dave Green and I soon found the cobia taking a liking to them with 4 fish hooked in the first hour. One of mine on the first cast of the day and the biggest a Greeny special somewhere in the vicinity of 1.6 to 1.7 metres in length. Enough to tire out this self confessed gym junkie.

Travelling up to the McDonald and Doughboy systems at lunch, our afternoon session was slightly tougher with a low pressure system hovering over the area. Another good feed and sleep and we were ready to confront another day in fishing mecca.

Day 5.
Trolling out the front with Peter Morgan and Peter May, I not only took part in some tinnie karaoke but we landing countless gray mackerel amongst more trevally, queenfish and cobia. Peter May landing a metre queenfish and Peter Morgan hooking up a shark as large as the tinnie on a lure meant for a mackerel, a fight that nearly saw him spooled 3 times.

Day 6.
Heading back to the actioned packed Jackson River, further trolling outside accounted for several metre plus mackerel and a swag of small black tip reef sharks that took a liking to a certain Halco lure that now displays heavy chew marks. With Gary Boyd landing a metre plus queenie on the flats, it was time to head 3 ½ hours south to Namaletta Creek, Port Musgrave.

A quiet came of Texas Holdem on the cruise down and it was time to set off again and catch some barra in the snags on poppers.

Day 7.
Heading back towards base camp at Janie creek, fishing flats, gutters, reefs and out wide this was perhaps our best day of fishing. Unforgettable moments that continued to occur of triple hook-ups with Chainsaw and Greeny to huge queenfish and GT’s that smashed any popper on the surface whether it be big or small.

With the wind to strong to find the same fish in the afternoon it was an actioned packed time anchored near the mouth fishing over the freshly flooded flats for giant herring, queenfish, brassy trevally, golden trevally, blue salmon, remora, cobia, tarpon and long toms. Any lure worked fast enough caught a fish a cast and reminded you never to be reincarnated as a bait fish.

Day 8.
With a cooked breakfast of bacon, eggs and baked beans it was to be a day of travel and hoping the beans didn’t make a resurgence. Safely back in Brisbane, we are reminded of arm pulling fun we experienced as a group and the accessibility to this remote place that Dick Foster and the Eclipse provides.

The Prize.

One lucky winner will be randomly drawn from the Daiwa BARRA Tour to experience Weipa at the newly built accommodation at Camp Chivaree. Dick has invested in 15 twin share safari style tents that allow fishing at your doorstep at the mouth of Janie Creek some 90km north of Weipa, FNQ.

This remote, comfortable Sportsfishing destination is managed by Dick Foster and Eclipse Charters for the indigenous Cooktown Family the Traditional Owners of the area.

The camp also plays part to a turtle rescue operation where people can come and meet large sea going turtles face to face on the beaches.

Camp Chivaree can cater for groups away from the crowds and can supply quad bikes with rod racks to hit the remote beaches, tinnies to head up the mangrove lined Janie Creek or outside in the fish rich waters.

With airport transfer included, charters can be fully or partially guided. Flying out from the east coast in the morning, you could be fishing that afternoon. This is how good the service provided to you is.

Tackle
I recommend that you need 3 outfits, a heavy spin stick for offshore, a medium spin stick for beach and flats fishing and a medium baitcaster for throwing lures at the mangroves and snags.

For example I used an Egrell S10 with a 3000 Daiwa Certate Hyper Custom spooled with 35lb Unitika braid. A G.Loomis PR844 with a 2500 Daiwa Certate Custom spooled with 20lb Daiwa SW Sensor braid and a Daiwa Advantage baitcaster with a 103L Alphas R-Edition spooled with 16lb Sunline Cast Away PE.

Although I took various sizes of leader I mainly used 30 or 40lb Saltiga Fluorocarbon, you will find that the toothy critters like mackerel will bite through anything.

Because of weight restrictions on the plane, you need to condense your lure collection. I took a tray of larger diving lures mainly used for trolling or offshore. A tray of various sized poppers for big GT’s and queenies to smaller bass and bream sized poppers for jacks and barra. Include several metal slugs and lipless vibration baits such as Jackalls. These lures can be jigged in the deep holes of the mouth or burned across the flats, fish can’t resist but to nail them. You will also need a tray of shallow and deep suspending lures for the snags.

Include several packets of plastics in the 3-6” range. The Americans loved to throw their top water frogs, however, I found the Ecogear 4-5” Power Shads did plenty of damage. Like always on the reefs fish can’t resist the Berkley Gulp and the 4” Minnows and 3” Prawns were constantly smashed.

Without adding too much weight take a variety of jig heads from weedless and lightly weighted weedless hooks like the jigheads from TT. A small mixture of weighted jigheadds from ¼ to ½ with good quality hooks. Remember to take extra split rings, trebles, pliers and scissors as well as sunglasses and plenty of suncream.

Sunline Peter Faust Morning Event- Final Results and Story

Cy and Kerrin Taylor continued their successful 2009 Daiwa Barramundi Tour with a 1st and 2nd place finish at the Sunline Peter Faust 2-day morning event. Fishing together as Team Shimano/Millerods the Taylor brothers found consistent bites over the two days to finish over a meter ahead of their nearest competitors. With Cy securing victory at the previous Teemburra event, the result at Faust handed him the Northern Barra Angler of the Year title. With the tour now heading south to events at Awoonga and Monduran, the task of securing the Southern and overall Barra Angler of the Year honors, is clearly on the agenda for these talented anglers.
Cy Taylor 9/10, 651cm captured victory at Faust with 83cm separating him from his brother Kerrin 9/10, 568cm . Fishing small bays deep in the timber at the back of the dam, Cy identified areas adjacent to deeper water that presented horizontal timber and structure. Tying off to trees, Cy would cast into the shallows before retrieving the lure with small hops.

“The water temperature was quite warm (approx 29-30 degrees) in the areas we identified. We found the fish were moving into deeper water, around 3 meters, where it was around two degrees cooler. We found three areas that provided fish over the two days. Consequently I was able to catch my limit on day 1 and four on day 2.”

A 110mm Squidgy Pro Slick Rig in Drop Bear colour fitted with a size 4 stinger treble through the belly proved to be the lure of choice. Alternating with a Rapala X-Rap in green Cy was able to secure the bites on offer.

“On day one the bites came fairly early. As the sun got up it became more difficult, but we both got our limits. Come day two the weather and wind changed, making conditions more challenging. We found that when the sun would come over the bites would often follow. We both secured four fish for the session and fortunately in the end that was enough.”

Cy’s outfit consisted of a Millerods Salty Barra rod teamed with a Shimano Core 100mg reel spooled with 20lb Fins braid and 80lb Black Magic Tough Trace leader. Kerrin used a Millerods High Roller rod teamed with a Shimano Curado reel spooled with 20lb Shimano Power Pro braid and 80lb Black Magic Tough Trace leader.

“We tend to use lighter breaking strain braid, as it allows for better feel and finesse. You may have to freespool if you get caught in the timber, but the bites you otherwise gain make it worthwhile.”

Robert Ebzery captured the events Big Barra of 117cm on day two of the tournament. Caught around 10am on a weedy point, the barramundi fell to a Stiffy Bony Bream lure in silver. Going deep the barramundi slugged it out before finally succumbing, much to the pleasure of Ebzery. Aaron Moggs session one beast of 115cm narrowly missed out to Ebzery’s fine catch.

Overall 124 barramundi were caught over the two days of the event with an average size of 63.59cm. The 2008 event at Peter Faust saw only 52 barramundi caught overall. Lindsey Dobe from the Peter Faust Dam Fish Stocking Association gratefully accepted a stocking donation of $250 for further continuation of the organisations great work. With water levels up and fish found scattered throughout the dam, ABT is sure to return to this great fishery in the not to distant future.

The Daiwa Barramundi Tour now travels south to Lake Awoonga for the Daiwa Night Championship event, Sat 28th – Sun 29th November. Briefing is on Saturday, 2.30pm at the Awoonga Dam Foreshore (adjacent to Rangers Hut), with the event beginning at 4pm and ending at 8am on Sunday 29th November. Engel Teemburra Evening Event- Final Results & Story

Cy Taylor showed his intent for the 2009 Daiwa BARRA Tour with victory in the opening round of the series, the Engel Teemburra Evening Event, 20/21st November.

The first round of the four event series, Taylor lead the charge, compiling a 10/10, 732cm limit to relegate first time podium finisher Willem Reichard, 9/10, 633cm to second place.

Victory for Taylor comes off the back of a success AFC campaign only a month prior, with the Teemburra champ teamed with his brother Kerrin and fishing a mid depth, main basin pattern to score his fish.
“We targeted fish we found with our sounder hanging on deep banks and points near the main basin”, explained Taylor.

Using his beloved Squidgy Slick Rig 110s in Drop Bear and Green Grunter colours Taylor would position his boat in four metres of water then cast up into the shallows (2 metres) then slow roll the plastic back, pausing it occasionally to allow it to sink back towards the bottom.

“It was important to keep the lure close to the bottom and keep it moving to intercept the barra as they moved up along the edge”, explained Taylor.

With the team catching 16 out of their 18 fish after dark Taylor was open in his assessment of the bite pattern of the event.

“It was hard to find numbers and sized fish during the daylight hours, once the sun went down things definitely turned on and the fished moved up out of the deep and started to feed”.

Jumping off two metre plus fish for the tournament Taylor’s victory could have been even more comprehensive had all the fish stuck.

The tackle he used to catch his winning fish included a Millerod Salty Barra rod, Shimano Core reel, spooled with Fins 20lb and 80lb Black Magic leader.

Adding to his $1250 cash earnings for the win Taylor topped up his bank balance with an additional bonus courtesy of the 1st placed $362 Pro Bonus payout. Claiming the champion team title at the event the pair will once again set the bench mark for team performance on the 2009 tour.

Securing the runner-up position at the event was 24 year old Feedlot Worker Willem Reichard.

Fishing with last year’s runner-up Jason Crofts for Team Gulpin Xraps, Reichard fished the Teemburra Creek arm of the dam, focusing on wind blown points at the back of timbered bays.

“Fishing windblow and deeper than usual locations was crucial for success”, explained Reichard.

With their boat in 15-20 feet Reichard would cast his Rapala Xrap (purple/ gold colour) towards the edge working it back through 15-20 feet strike zone with a three-twitch-pause retrieve.

“We were using 10 and 8 cm Xraps that would dive to about eight feet and it was on the pause as the lure sat motionless before the next twitch that most of the fish would hit the lure”, explained Reichard.

“A deeper pattern than usual is something that many of us found during the tournament, and it seemed to be important for finding quality and quantity”, explained Reichard.

Dropping ten fish on day one and seven on day two the pair’s catch sheet could have read even more impressive than their fourth placing fourteen.

The tackle Reichard used to present his money winning Xraps included a 10-17lb Samurai Reaction rod, Shimano Cronach MG50 reel, spooled with 20lb Berkley Tracer Braid and 40lb Black Magic fluorocarbon leader.

“We went light with 20lb mainline so we could get maximum depth and action with our lures”, explained Willem.

His best result to date on the Daiwa BARRA Tour Reichard is excited about the rest of the tour.

“It’ll be great to fish hard for a couple of weeks and experience the fishing out barra dams have to offer”, explained the Teemburra Dam runner-up.

The Daiwa Big Barra for the event went to two prize winning anglers, with Shimano BARRA Pro Alan McNamara catching two 92cm fish on day two and Spencer Troxell landing and equal sized fish on day one.

The quality and quantity of fish during the event set new records for the venue, with the field landing 231 fish for the tournament, eclipsing last year’s 201. The average length of fish show a similar improvement, jumping from last year’s 54.27 cm to 67.90cm. With a $250 Stocking Donation made to the MAFSA all bodes well for further growth and barra numbers for the future.

The next stop on the Daiwa BARRA Tour sees the series head north for the Sunline Peter Faust Morning Event, 24/25th November. For event information and entry visit www.australianbarra.com.au or contact ABT (07) 3387 0888.
